The Rotaract Club of Ottawa has three committees that meet outside of our general meeting times: the International Service Committee, the Community Service Committee and the Membership Committee. Participating in committee meetings is a great way to become more actively involved in the club. We are always looking for input and new ideas at our meetings!
International Service Committee
The International Service Committee organizes activities and events to engage the Rotaract Club’s members and supporters in international projects. Under the direction of the International Service Director, Alex Pickett, this committee will be organizing various fundraisers and events throughout the year.
Past international projects include:
Global Awareness week: This event in March 2013 included a “purple pinkie” day on the uOttawa campus for polio eradication awareness, where students, staff and community members made donations and then had their pinkie dyed purple (a sign used to denote when a child has been vaccinated against polio). The week also included a hunger banquet and a conflict minerals awareness event.
Roaring Twenties Cocktail Evening: A fundraiser in November 2012 which raised over $2000 for the Etete orphanage in South Africa, which is being partially supported by the Rotary Club of Ballito. The event featured live music, appetizers, drinks, and a photo booth.
10th Year Anniversary Gala: The committee organized a gala for the Rotaract Club of Ottawa’s 10th year anniversary. Close to 200 people attended the event at the National Art’s Centre, and over $4000 was raised for polio eradication efforts through PolioPlus.
In addition to our ongoing committment to PolioPlus, the club has supported Justica Nos Trilhos (2011), Project Tembo (2008), Empowering Women Though Education program in Panvel Industrial Town, India (2007), Wheelchair Foundation (2006), WaterCan (2006), Rotaboats (2005), the Rwanda Orphanage Project (2004), and Project Love (2004-2005).

Community Service Committee
The goal of this committee is to plan and promote projects that involve members of the local community. Headed by the Community Service Director, Holly Whittaker, this committee continuously plans a variety of community projects intended to increase the members’ awareness of social issues existing in our community.
Each month, the Community Service Committee volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) to prepare a meal for the families of children who are in the care of the hospital. In addition, crafts and activities are planned for the siblings of children who may be staying at the Ronald McDonald House. This is a great opportunity to give back to families who may be from outside of the Ottawa region and who are looking for a nice, home-cooked meal during a stressful time.
Rotaract Bowl-A-Thon: The community service committee has raised over $4000 for the Ottawa Rotary Home with our annual Bowl-A-Thon events since 2010. Planning is underway for the next event in; come out to our committee meetings to help organize the next event! The Ottawa Rotary Home provides short term respite care to families who have a child or children with a physical disability. For more information, visit their website at http://www.rotaryhome.on.ca/
In the past Rotaractors have also volunteered with:
The Ottawa Food Bank
St. Joe’s Women’s Shelter and Soup Kitchen
The Ottawa Mission
Shepherds of Good Hope
The Community Service committee also works in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Ottawa to participate in a number of Rotary led projects including:
Adventures in Citizenship
Annual All that Jazz Golf Tournament and Fundraising Dinner
To participate in any of these projects or to suggest a possible community service project for the Rotaract Club of Ottawa, join the committee or contact Holly at email@example.com.
The Membership Committee puts on membership events, promotes the club and also organizes social events for Rotaract Ottawa Members. Our Membership Director is Vinay Sharma, and he is eager to hear from members to help plan new events!
Previous events organized by the Membership Committee include the membership events at Carleton University and University of Ottawa, going to see Ottawa Senator games among others.
If you would like to join the Membership committee, have any ideas for social events or want to help promote the club then the Membership Committee is for you! Contact Vinay at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to get involved.
