Minuets from Rotaract General Meeting
January 11 2009
SMD 123 (UOttawa campus)
Roll: Natalya (President), Clifford (vice-president), Michelle (past-president 2007-2008), Kyle (secretary),
Gorana (community service director), Mangla (International service director), Jon (external
communications director), 18 other members and 9 guests
Called to order at 19h04 by Natalya (President)
Quick introduction in which guests and members said name, program, and shared what they did to
welcome the New Year.
Business of the Club:
New Year’s Stories- A Rotaract club in Jakarta is asking for stories of how different people in
different cultures ring in the New Year. Members were asked to send any stories or traditions that they
have to the club, and the club will forward them along to the group in Jakarta. The original email will be
sent out in the club update on Tuesday.
OC Transpo: The strike of OCTranspo was discussed and how that will affect members getting to
meetings. It was decided that we will still hold a meeting on January 25th at Carleton, and that we will
skate to Carleton as a fellowship activity prior to the meeting.
Chilli Chilly Sunday: An annual fellowship event with our sponsoring club, Chilli Chilly Sunday
will be Feb.1 at the Dow’s Lake arboretum.
Treasurer: Our current treasurer Krishna has accepted a job in Montreal. Congratulations to
him. However, he has left a hole in our executive for this year. Therefore, we are asking any members
who feel they are able to be treasurer to apply to the account.
ZONE conference: The zone 22 conference will be in Edmonton in September 17-19 2009. Zone 22
includes Canada, the USA, part of Russia and France. The early-bird registration is open. Members are
asked to respond by the Feb 8 meeting if they are interested, with money due at the Feb 8 meeting. For
those interested we will organise transport to Edmonton, and hopefully get group discount rates and
payment options from airlines. Clifford will look into this. The cost of the conference is $100, with early
registrants paying $50 upfront instead of $100 upfront. It is also possible that we can get payment deals
and billets if we register early.
Speaker: Tania Dopler
Tania Dopler, or Thunderbear, of the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS strategy spoke to the club on
her work as an outreach worker. She started by talking to us about the organisation she works with and
what her job as outreach worker entails, then asked us to trust her while she demonstrated one of the
techniques she uses in her work. She played the sound and rhythm of a heartbeat to us and spoke to us
about how this can help build trust between her and other people and why, explaining that it is a
naturally soothing rhythm as it reminds us of being safe in our mother’s womb.
Community Service Update: (Gorana)
St. Joe’s: 2 members of the club will be volunteering at St. Joe’s Supper table every other Friday.
A sign up sheet was passed around.
Canned food drive: The club will be doing another canned food drive on the 26th of February. A
couple people requested to help distribute papers to the residents about a week in advance.
Brownie Workshop: In concert with Melissa Moor and Laurel Rasmus, who are leaders at a local
brownie group, we are running a workshop for the girls on a Wednesday regarding something health-ish
oriented. Date to be announced.
International Service Update:(Mangla)
Polio-plus: The events of the last term raised $550 for the Polio-plus project. We are looking to
raise $1000 and will be holding a pub night in late January or early February to raise the remaining $450.
Next project: The club will be selecting the next ISP in the next 2 weeks. The club has opened
this up to an all member vote, which will be run through the email account.
Upcoming events:
Community Service Meeting: The next community service meeting will be January 20 at 2PM.
Location TBA
International Service Meeting: The next International service meeting will be January 18 at
7PM. Location: Bridgehead at Bank/Albert
General Meeting: The next General meeting will be January 25 at 7PM. Location : Carleton
University. This will be preceded by a fellowship skate to Carleton.
Meeting was adjourned by Natalya at 20h40
